Good Afternoon Flyers Families,

We are excited to announce a new partnership with Freeman’s Lower Sackville to celebrate the outstanding individuals in our association.

Beginning this week, every Flyer of the Week—whether a player or a volunteer—will receive an exclusive coupon generously provided by Freeman’s Lower Sackville. Each Flyer of the week will also be entered into a monthly draw to win their team a pizza party at Freeman's Lower Sackville! We are grateful for their support in helping us highlight the dedication, sportsmanship, and positive spirit that make our hockey community so special.

We are thrilled to kick off our 2025/26 Flyers of the Week with an incredible story from our U18A Sackville Flyers—a perfect example of the teamwork, character, and effort we aim to recognize throughout the season.

To submit your story for consideration for our Flyer of the Week, please use the following form:

Form: https://forms.gle/TSudbVd5pUt2itEK7

Thank you to Freeman’s Lower Sackville for their commitment to our community and for supporting our Flyers!

The Deadline for Coach Certifications is December 1, 2025

Coach Reimbursements

Please complete this 2025-26 Coaching Course Reimbursement Form for reimbursement of completed coaching courses.
Only courses required at your coaching level will be reimbursed; You will not be reimbursed for advanced-level courses, or courses potentially needed in the future. Submit receipts after the course and documentation are completed.

Certification Requirements

All SMHA Volunteers and Coaches must obtain certifications as per Hockey Nova Scotia and Hockey Canada.

Please note that as per Hockey Nova Scotia, the "Respect in Sport: Activity Leader" course is no longer required for new coaches and volunteers in 2025. It has been replaced by a new course called "The Shift Forward", linked on the Hockey Nova Scotia certifications page below. Those with Respect in Sport: Activity Leader do not need to take The Shift Forward as they are being considered equivalent.

Each required course is linked on the
Hockey Nova Scotia's Volunteer Requirements Page
 .

  • Certification Requirements must be completed by December 1, 2025.
  • Hockey Nova Scotia will remove coaches from Official HCR Rosters if Certification Requirements are not completed by December 1, 2025.
  • This may impact the team's ability to practice and participate in Games & Tournaments.

Checking Your Own HCR Profile

SMHA Volunteers and Coaches are responsible for logging into the Hockey Canada Registry (aka HCR 3.0) to check the status of their own credentials and any additional requirements for the upcoming season.

Criminal Record Checks

It is very important that you use THIS LINK (https://www.backcheck.net/hockeynovascotia/) for your Criminal Record Check. This link covers the cost of the Criminal Record Check, and makes your results visible to Sackville Minor Hockey Association. Select "Sackville MHA" from the drop-down list. It is also important to watch for a reply from Halifax Regional Police containing your Serial Number. Your Serial Number must be copied and pasted into your MyBackCheck account to share your Criminal Record Check results with Sackville Minor Hockey.

If for any reason a volunteer's Criminal Record Check requires fingerprinting, it can take quite a long time to process. Backlogs with the system can also occur near the the December 1st deadline. Please do not delay starting this step.

  • If you don't receive an email from Halifax Regional Police, you can call them at 902-490-1329.
  • If you receive a reply indicating you require fingerprinting, please reach out to Craig Foley at RiskManagement@FlyersHockey.ca. We will provide you with a Fingerprint Request letter, and you will need to bring that to Halifax Police Headquarters at 1975 Gottingen St.
    • Click Here for a letter from Hockey Nova Scotia requesting the Fingerprint Fee be reduced or waived.
  • After all is completed, you should receive an email from Halifax Regional Police stating the Criminal Record Check is completed.

Big News! Sackville Minor Awarded $22,000 Mental Health Grant!

Hello Flyers Family!

At Sackville Minor Hockey, we are accountable to our players. We believe in developing the whole athlete. Our responsibility extends beyond the game to the overall physical and mental health of our players.

This commitment means ensuring both players and coaches receive education and training that address the mental health impacts of sport. We are working to equip athletes and coaches alike with the tools to navigate mental health challenges and to foster a supportive, inclusive, and positive hockey environment.

With that, I am beyond excited to announce that SMH has been awarded a $22,000 grant from the Mental Health Foundation of Nova Scotia to provide mental health training for our coaches, development staff and players this year!

Over the next month, a committee will be stood up to plan and develop the training program. The training will be:

-            Evidence-based

-            Tailored to athletes & coaches

-            Provided to (some) teams as part of their player development

-            Provided to all coaches and development staff

-            Delivered by trained MHA professionals

-            Evaluated for player/coach/parent feedback

If you are interested in learning more about this training or wish to be part of the training program development, please reach out to vpadmin@flyershockey.ca.

Thank you!
