SMHA Competitive Tryout Process Information

Welcome to the Sackville Minor Hockey Association Tryouts Resource Centre.

This section has been created to provide SMHA members with clear, accessible information about the tryout process and the resources available to players and families.

Here, members can find important tryout policies and procedures, links to flow charts, timelines, FAQs, forms, and other resources to help families understand what to expect throughout the tryout process. Our goal is to provide a consistent and transparent process while ensuring members know where to go when they have questions, concerns, or require additional support.

Please review the information provided before submitting any forms, as different forms serve different purposes and may have specific timelines or review procedures. All submissions will be handled in accordance with SMHA policies and procedures.

SMHA Tryout Feedback

SMHA values feedback from players and families throughout the tryout process. This form provides Sackville Minor Hockey members with an opportunity to share constructive feedback about their tryout experience, including the process, communication, organization, and overall experience. Feedback submitted through this form will be collected for review and consideration as SMHA evaluates and improves future tryout processes.

Please note: Tryout feedback forms will not be reviewed until after November 1. This form is intended for feedback purposes only and is not an avenue for requesting a meeting, appealing a decision, or seeking an immediate response during the tryout process. For concerns requiring immediate review, please use the Tryout Appeal Form.

SMHA Tryout Appeal

SMHA recognizes that there may be circumstances during the tryout process that warrant formal review. The Tryout Appeal Form provides members with the appropriate avenue to submit an appeal for consideration by the designated Tryout Appeal Committee.

Appeals submitted through this form will be reviewed immediately by the members of the Appeal Committee in accordance with SMHA’s established tryout policies and procedures. This form is the only accepted avenue for requesting an appeal with the Appeal Committee during the tryout process. Requests submitted through other channels, including direct requests to coaches, evaluators, executives, board members, or volunteers, will not be considered as formal appeal requests. Any request submitted with foul language will not be considered.

Members are encouraged to review the applicable tryout policies and procedures before submitting an appeal and to provide clear, factual information relevant to their request. Please note that appeals based only on the result of the tryout session are not considered. Appeals will only be reviewed where the tryout process has not been followed.

SMHA Excused Absence Request

SMHA expects all players participating in the Competitive Tryout process to make every effort to attend all scheduled sessions. However, SMHA recognizes that, in certain circumstances, a player may be unable to participate through no fault of their own. Excused Absence requests are reviewed on a case-by-case basis imeddiately and approval is not guaranteed.

Eligible circumstances may include:

  • Illness or injury, supported by a medical note from a qualified medical professional. The anticipated return to full on-ice participation, including games, must be no later than December 1.
  • Compassionate circumstances, such as a family tragedy.
  • Specific religious holidays.

Parents/Guardians should submit the request through the Excused Absence Request Form as soon as the absence is known and provide as much detail and supporting documentation as possible, including the expected departure and return-to-play dates.

Requests will be reviewed by SMHA and will be designated as either an Excused Absence or Unexcused Absence. Absences for school trips, other sports or extracurricular activities, family gatherings, or similar commitments will generally be considered unexcused, except where specifically permitted under SMHA policy.

For approved illness or injury absences, a medical note confirming clearance to return to SMHA-sanctioned hockey must be provided before the player resumes participation. Players with an approved Excused Absence will be placed at the conclusion of the Competitive Tryout process; no placement decisions are made before or during the process, and placement decisions are final.
